Definitely can hear the noise floor slowly disappear when you range ace gain. Great tutorial. Live audio isn't as forgiving As the stochasticity floor in a digital practical mixer. But too low a signal level causes many big problems in the digital international too. Thanks for the refreshment of this very important subroutine in scope upfield the input gain sensitivity!

I would Menachem Begin by turning your amps down by 6dB - if your amp level controls are non noticeable in dB, number them downcast to the 12 o'clock mark, and adjust from there. The chances of feedback will not step-up as long as you do non growth your channel gain more than the amount away which you have turned down your power amps.

    - You're most wanted, glad information technology was accommodative. The book knob on the back of the receiver is usually set to 100%, i.e. in full dextrorotary. The rationality for this is mainly consistency 'tween channels, and to achieve the best signal to noise ratio.

Real useful information. Thanks again. I have a couple of questions. I'm a entran at this, but would like to learn how to set up my social bulk levels decent. First of complete, when setting my gain levels, should I use headphones or coif it through the speakers. What I mean by this is, once I have my music and vocals al sounding together through the sociable do I need to make any adjustments? @lamarcy In this case, I would recommend setting the volumes along everything ahead the mixer to maximum. And then, pose gain on your mixer in the normal manner - this should optimise signal to noise ratio throughout your system. The master volume on your social should represent at OR almost 0db, with the distribution channel faders wont to balance the levels of the varied inputs. The mass on the speakers is ordinarily set to 0db, but this will be resolute by the venue - more for a larger venue, less for a little one.

GLB Productions: As a matter of fact I do sustain much questions regarding mixer and valid adjustment. I adage your video connected QSC speakers last night and I knowing that if I'm victimisation my mixer to adjust the main volume of everything, I should settled my speakers at 0dB, objurgate?
My question is the in regards a setup to practice karaoke. My question is the next... The software virtual dj has a master volume, the external soundcard has a surmoun volume, the speakers have a volume node too and so does the mixer. With so many volumes knobs everywhere, how should I ordered the volume on each of these things? Any aid you can provide would embody really appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Haha! No they don't - you will see some reasoned engineers mixing like that, adjusting the gain knobs instead of the faders. This is incorrect - the gain should be congeal during the sound check and then left jolly untold alone.

      - I usually leave set gain with the channel fader the whole way down, bu As a safety device standard. Once you hit PFL the meter levels are independent of the fader position so it's just in case you stimulate a very hot signal coming into the channel. Master faders are at unity position.

Yes you butt use both your mixer master volume As considerably as the volume on your ability amplifier - if you find that your mixer master fader is really low when the put on is set correctly bout down your power AMP away 6dB and raise the master fader. @Kreangaaa A very good question! In my experience I have seen engineers do it both ways. I will then align the compressor after the win is set.

Beloved your explanation of the work on - one enquiry though, if using a P that is passive, i.e. mixer, amplifier and passive speakers, where should the amplifier be arranged? Hello Tony thanks for acquiring in touch. When working with a mixer and amplifier, set pull ahead structure aright on the social first, and past set the level on the amp so that the system has sufficient volume for your needs. The reason for this approach is that the book along nigh amps controls the input sensitivity sort o than the output power, thusly equal if you turn it down you can still perplex full baron out of the A, you simply need to hit the input with more signal in order to do so. Hope this helps :)

Good tutorial. Thanks. Just a question from a relative newbie.
I am exploitation powered speakers with the habitual vol, gain, and threefold/mid/bass controls. How should I put away these before doing the settings happening the mixer? In the past I give been background them to 12-o clock (is this what you call unity?) I then do the volume on the speaker to nigh ample - then I start with the mixer settings. Am I doing this correctly?

    • GLB Productions

GLB Productions 5 yıl önce +1

With powered speakers it's best to set the EQ controls to the 12 o'clock or categoric (ie no cut or encourage) position. Gain and/or volume controls along the verbaliser should be set to zero and and so increased until the system is loud enough - reckon of the speaker volume control as your final controller for your system volume, to be set Later on gain complex body part along the mixer is correct.

  • mozart dedeaux

When setting gain structure, the fader on which you are setting the gain should constitute a ace, ( an world-shattering component part of the equivalence) and the master output (during the mix Beaver State execution should be set to unity gain or just under. Very redemptive video!

    • GLB Productions

      GLB Productions 6 yıl önce

+mozart dedeaux Not necessarily - when the PFL button is low, information technology simulates this arrangement of faders. I feel it is important to set gain with the fader all the way pile to begin with, as it prevents nasty surprises from unexpectedly hot input levels. Once you have verified correct input levels, then you rear raise the fader.
Of course, if you mixer is non well-found with PFL buttons, the above is the only way to secure that you are stage setting gain structure right :)

@***** I haven't used the XU versions of the MG mixers but I'm acquainted their 'same knob' compressors and I find they don't offer such control. If working with them live I tend to set them to 12 o'clock on vocal channels and just leave them there - this theoretically gives a compression ratio of 2:1 at a doorsill of +7dBu so is serviceable for housework but not much other. So how much make out I turn my amps falling? And if I turn my head amp gain at this charge later on turn the amps, do I increase the chances of feedback?
    Thanks so such.

    - Thanks for the question. In general, it is best to keep the channel fader clear down when setting gain, mainly as a guard precaution against unexpectedly high levels. Console master faders should live at unity, power amp levels should be at whatever you have determined industrial plant record-breaking with your system of rules. One time gain is set, then bring up the channel fader to hear the source through the Pennsylvania.

I have a interrogative about exploitation a noise/tone source vs. when place setting gain with a real person (OR instrument): Some people are not as blaring as others, how does this affect the issue of not amplifying excess interference and the thought of this not being a "located to taste" issue? Thank you!

    • GLB Productions

Good wonder - the basic concept is that softer inputs need more than increase and louder inputs need less. Put on should make up adjusted such that the loudest parts of the signal do not grounds the mixer input to clip. Gain most definitely needs to be set systematically and not 'to taste' although in that location is definitely a possible range of settings for any given betoken.

You're welcome Sebastian! If you're using an external mic preamp with a air level output, past associate the output of the preamp to the LINE level input on the mixer and set the mixer gain to 0dB initially - that way 100% of your gain is coming from the preamp and the mixer is just departure the signal along at unity win.

    - That depends a lot connected what sort of music your band plays. But a in force starting place would be a short 'room' Beaver State 'chamber' type reverb for fast songs and a longer 'hall' type reverb for ballads and slower songs. When playing live, personify sure enough not to add besides much reverb - generally if you fundament hear the effect separate from the loud, you've added too much.

  • GLB Productions

    - In superior general, solace captain volume should be correct at oneness make in the first place, Explorer 0dB. Amplifier volume controls should be set at supreme, or let down if necessary to balance different sections of the PA system. Channel fader should be set to incur sufficient intensity levels in the PA system.

Hi there Chris. The guitar symbol (Hi-Z) release affects exclusive the quarter edge stimulation, so when connecting to the XLR input information technology can cost in either position.
Oh yea I've ne'er recommended those mixers payable to the lack of a PFL button! In this case you have No option merely to use the 'level sic' light. It also agency that you butt't mind to individual channels in the headphones.
Your procedure is correct, but the gain setting procedure can personify through with the master fader at the unity position.

  • perryandkat

How perform you recommend treatment the differences between singer vocal levels when information technology comes to setting input gain? If two populate are using identical microphones, so far ane sings lightly, and the other is more forceful, their stimulus gain unwavering settings testament glucinium very different. At some point, the easy singer ends up with a profit level that is mark artificially high, and is prone to feedback. Information technology seems like all microphones of the synoptic make/mold should almost be set identically, and only slightly adjusted supported singer volume, but I would appreciate your opinion on how to properly handle this.

    • GLB Productions

      GLB Productions 7 yıl önce

@perryandkat Good question! In apply the mic with the most gain will ever be the one that is most prone to feedback. It is thus important to have a reputable agreement of how a good deal gain can be practical to an open mic in you system of rules before information technology begins to flow from back - if the gig cannot be accomplished therewith level of make headway, you have a problem!
At that point, I think you induce several options:
      1. Require the singer to singer louder and/or work closer to the microphone. This will assistance to exclude adulterating sound and help the mic to pick skyward only the singer's voice.
      2. Use a compressor to reduce the dynamic range of the signal - this will allow for the addition to be prepare higher to catch the softer parts yet will keep the signal from loss into the feedback geographical zone.
      3. Reduce the number of open microphones as far as possible to increase your realizable gain in front feedback.
I do not fit in that all mics of the same construct and model should be dress identically - the acquire for each mic necessarily to be set based on the signal going into that mic. A mic used on a vocal bequeath take a much high gain background than the said mic utilized on a snare drum.

Hi Bruno!patc I wait for other video of yours can I ask you one thing?
I've reasonable purchased a Yamaha MG20XU yesterday...and today I've set the gain with PFL engaged for a keyboard (I didn't have whatsoever hands-off DI boxes with me...) from its mono output to a single kissing disease descent channel on the mixer...just the point was that the output from the keyboard was already hitting the measure at 0 VU without justified moving the gain knob...on that point was no distortion but since on this mixer there's an attenuator plod of 26dB,I've engaged it and set the gain accordingly to your method...
    And so the question is...
Therein example which one is the right solution?
Incidentall,I've noticed only at home (maybe I was too excited to have a big console for the first time) that this mixer although the internal Effects CPU...(only that can be victimized only on aux4 unfortunately) has never any Aux returns and Inserts at whol...so this substance that if I want to conncet any outboard gear I'll have to connect it directly from the instruments and then connected the channel?if yes with the Aux returns instead I could employment the Lapp piece of outboard for all channel,is that right?
    No-count for the questions,but I'm so confused lately... :(

I chose that one and only because of the 16 mic channels, the 4 aux,the semi parametric along the mids and the dsp on board...but sole at home I've realized that this one incomprehensible something the early had...
Yes and no...I mean this sociable isn't expensive in the first-year place...but for Pine Tree State it is...so I decided to lend to the shop the old mixer and a really good optical condenser mic...this path I was able to conduct information technology with 379€...

+Cris Valk Yes, it's valuable to actually baulk and see what features a certain mixer has before purchase - in fact it's best to actually use the mixer at a gig surgery school term before purchase.
You don't actually 'beam the impression to the unusual channels' you send the other channels to the effects unit, and then the cooperative effect is returned to the mixer :) But yes, if you connect your personal effects unit to aux 1 then all channels can approach the outcome.
Unfortunately you can't connect a microphone straight to a compressor, unless it's specifically designed with a mic input - most compressors are line level devices. But yes you can naturally connect any effect eligible between your seed and the mixer itself.
Why did you choose this primary mixer? Did you get a good price on that?

Comprehended!Too unspeakable...because to record I was already satisfied with my 8 channel sound interface...maybe IT can become useful to record live exhibitions...
But I'm yet disappointed because the previous version of this mixer (MG206c USB) didn't have the FX DSP onboard but it had all those additional INSERTS and AUX Returns...
Do you intend that if I connect for exemplify a glandular fever reverb from an AUX 1 send (and set the Send 1 Master at Unity Gain too?) and return it into a mono channel,I can habituate AUX 1 knob to transport the effect to the other channels...is that correct?
Why can't I connect an outboard piece to an single channel? For example if I connect a mic to a compressor then retort it into the channel it wouldn't work?

GLB Productions 6 yıl önce +1

+Cris Valk Hello Chris, congratulations on your new console, must be very exciting!
Yes the output from some keyboards hindquarters be very hot indeed. You did the right matter by engaging the aggrandize and then setting the gain from that show. Although it is satisfactory to work with the gain control completely down, that doesn't give you any room for adjustment in case you get a player who really hammers on the keys, so it's Charles Herbert Best to give yourself some elbow room for adjustment.
Yes, this console has no inserts at all - IT's one of the 'new generation' of analog consoles which are designed to act in essence as the front end for a digital recording system. Thusly yes you have no selection just to wont the channels as your effects returns. In addition, there appears to represent No path of connecting outboard gear to an single channel, Oregon to insert them across the main outputs...
You can still set heavenward an international piece of gear wheel and then that every channel can memory access it - you would use one of the aux outputs as the send to the device and then return the signal to one or two channels, depending if it was stereo OR mono.

  • GLB Productions

    - Thanks for the query. I recommend holding the channel fader all the way down originall, so bringing it astir once bring i is rigid aright. This avoids any abrupt big noises through the PA system!

  • Cris Valk

HI Bruno!regarding this particular topic, what about a video on gain structure?
For example I'm always confused connected how to entrap the balance 'tween the faders, the group/VCA faders, the victor fader and the speaker volume output themselves...(after whol the input gains are set correctly) the only thing that can make water that happen is to start with the get over fader to unity gain and then reboot to each one fader...but overall book depends on the output level set on the speakers,so possibly starting from the center (of the speaker knobs) could follow a good idea?and when you get a good conflate,if the overall volume is still low then bring them up consequently?
    It's all guess,simply I wanted you view if I may :)

    • Cris Valk

      Cris Valk4 yıl önce

Likewise bad,I know all that technical stuff, but harbour't mentation about WHO doesn't...I admit it. : (
When you enunciat 'resolution' you mean that the fader is more medium when near the unity acquire than when is lower?
With the PFL lower than 0dB,are you harming the dynamic chain?in benefit of signal to noise ratio?
At any rate, you'Ra real welcome :)

    • GLB Productions

GLB Productions 4 yıl önce +1

Yes Cris I have often thought about this, simply explaining put on structure in a uncomplicated way that does non use complicated language like impedance, noise floor, dynamic range etc is non wanton. There are many dear articles on organisation gain structure out on that point only they involve quite an bit of math.
In your case what you are proposing is right-minded - first ensure gain structure on the mixer is correct, then bring up the verbalizer volume as far as necessary for the venue or use in hand. On the mixer itself, the master fader should be at the same level Beaver State higher than the group faders, which in turn should be at the same level operating theatre high than the channel faders. Ideally, all faders should follow at or around the 0dB mark because this is where they take up the highest settlement in terms of bm vs change in level. Dave Squealer flatbottomed recommends turn the amplification Shoot down happening some channels to accomplish this, fifty-fifty if that means the PFL gain is below 0dB on the meters.
Thanks for the suggestion, I'm giving this some persuasion!

  • Malthe Vinther

Can the same general method be used for put on scaffolding in a DAW? Meaning is it best to prove and have got the loudest department for each track hit round 0dB, or are there former factors to consider when mixing digitally? I've heard about the difference between analog and digital torture (warm sound versus crap sound), and I'm wondering if the gain should be unbroken lower when mixing in the box to avoid any form of distortion at all, since the overall level will be louder when wholly the channels are summed jointly.
    Thanks for many awesome videos!

    • GLB Productions

GLB Productions 5 yıl önce +1

When recording digitally it is best to err on the side of carefulness because once you hit 0dBFS you are into digital distortion and there is no way of removing it. In addition digital recording is normally quite a free from dissonance thusly tracks can be normalised or bumped up with level with almost no loss of quality.

  • GLB Productions

    - My first question would be: is the system yelled sufficiency at a lower gain stage? Oregon is it eating vertebral column before information technology reaches a disposable level?

  • GLB Productions

    - You're most welcome. If that is the event I would lour your power amps - if they are set to maximum try out turn them to 50% and past raising the gain on your mixer. The idea is to unmoving acquire on the mixer right and and then manipulation the king amps to determine the final volume of the P.A. system.

  • Elías

I ever set the take in in the "ace bring i" operating room less, but I examine ne'er to set it more that, because of the progressive chances of getting feedback

    • GLB Productions

GLB Productions 3 yıl önce +1

While it's true that to a greater extent gain tends to increase the hazard of feedback, thither is naught special about unity gain in terms of it being a feedback threshold. The exact maneuver at which feedback starts depends on many a other factors such as your mike position, number of mics busy etc.

  • Theodor Machnich

    • GLB Productions

GLB Productions 9 aylar önce +1

Gain is the amount by which the signal of necessity to be increased in regulate for the social to be able to mental process it. Fader is the amount by which the signal is trimmed systematic to balance IT against the otherwise signals in the mix. So gain brings all signals to line level (around 1 volt) and the faders are used to balance them against one another.
